We all experience stress. Stress is a completely natural physical and mental reaction that we have towards various situations. What people don’t know, however, is that stress can be both beneficial or harmful towards your body.
What is Stress?
When feeling any sort of stress, our bodies respond by sending out hormones to increase heart and breathing rates. These hormones also help our brain to get more oxygen, which in turn helps us to respond to intense situations. Essentially, stress keeps us on our toes and keeps us ready for spontaneous incidents.
Our strength, stamina, speed, and reaction time all increase when we experience stress. Physical changes may include an increase in blood pressure, tightening muscles, and sharper senses. These experiences could also be referred to as the beginning stages of the “fight or flight” response.
Stress can be a good thing, as it can provide us with the strength we need to defend ourselves and rise up to difficult challenges. But, if stress is caused by something outside our comfort zones, it could cause some serious damages to our body.
Effects of Chronic Stress
If constantly experiencing the symptoms of chronic stress, your body can undergo some serious negative factors. Unfortunately, your body cannot decipher the difference between stress caused by a life-threatening situation or from a simple, everyday cause (i.e. an argument with your loved one.)
When you consistently experience this amount of stress, it can create a giant burden on your immune, digestive, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. Stress may also cause pain and lack of sleep, which directly affects your mood and creates a vicious, unhealthy cycle.
In addition, chronic stress can also cause symptoms of depression, anxiety, skin conditions (such as eczema), and even weight gain.

How To Overcome Stress
Although stress can cause these various symptoms, stress is still a normal experience for most people. At one point or another, we will all inevitably have to experience stress over a certain situation. However, there are ways to get past the hard times and overcome your stress symptoms.
First off, nothing is more important than finding a support system. If you are overstressed, find help. Whether that means your family, a close friend, or a professional, it is important to surround yourself with people who will help you achieve your goals in any instance, including overcoming stress.
Secondly, find out what is exactly causing or triggering your stress symptoms. Finding the route of the problem is always the best way to find a resolution. Perhaps by finding out what is causing your symptoms in the first place, you will be able to figure out why you tend to feel stressed. And, thus, overcome them.
Thirdly, and our personal favorite, get moving. Stress often gives us the experience of feeling “stuck,” potentially causing some of us to gain weight. Performing physical activities that require movement is essential to relieving yourself from feeling stress. Even if it is just a walk around the block, the change of scenery and focus will lift your spirits. Plus, you will be promoting a healthier lifestyle for yourself!
Finally, set some time aside to relax. Techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing can are all effective ways of removing ourselves from the “fight or flight” response.
