The Ultimate Step-By-Step Guide To Meal Planning & Prep In 2016

Right off the bat, we’re going to hit you with a very real and very important statistic.

As far as your health goals are concerned, 80-90% of your overall success will come from your diet. 

If you’ve just started working out at the gym on a routine basis, great!

Seriously, that’s a really great start. However, if your sole focus to live a better and healthier lifestyle is going to the gym, rather than watching what you eat and how much of it, you may be creating a wall in front of yourself without even knowing it.

And we don’t blame you! Without question, life definitely tends to throw a ton of curveballs at you. The boss sets up a meeting during your lunch hour, you’ve gotta pick up the kids and bring them to soccer practice so you don’t have time to cook, or you just simply wanna order from your favorite pizza spot and watch another episode of your Netflix show. We get it.

But, what if we could convince you to do something that could completely prevent all of that from happening…not life’s curveballs, but the unhealthy decisions that come afterward. The answer? Meal prepping.

 

What is Meal Prepping?

As soon as you hear “meal prepping”, you’re already probably thinking of all the gym-rats, bodybuilders, and #fitfam people you see all the time. On the contrary, though, meal prepping actually has a TON of benefits for the everyday working person. Whether you’re looking to live a healthier lifestyle, or simply just want to get the weeks worth of cooking out of the way, meal prepping is definitely right for you!

So, what are the benefits of meal prepping?

1. You will save time!!!

The majority of the world’s problems comes down to one thing…Time. You’re probably thinking that it would be a large initial investment of time in the beginning of the week, but that’s actually not the case at all! You can create a week’s worth of meals in nearly the same amount of time it would take you to create one meal. And once you cook for the week, you’ll have many extra hours throughout the week to get things done with the time you originally never had!

2. It’ll stop you from overeating / not eating at all

With your meals already pre-planned and pre-made, you’ll no longer have to worry about the rush of cooking last-minute meals and/or eating too much of an unhealthy choice. Everything’s already in your fridge and prepared for you to eat whenever you’re ready!

3. You will save some serious $$$

Meal prepping will inevitably prevent you from that last-minute fast food run if you didn’t already have a meal ready for you. All of those “just this once” unhealthy choices you make will add up to your wallet, but meal prepping can help you avoid all that! Not to mention all the medical costs that you could face later on in life as a consequence of all those unhealthy choices.

4. You’ll be held accountable…in a positive way

Prepping your meals in advance gives you the ability to properly portion your daily meals. This means that you’ll be sure that you’re consuming all the necessary calories and nutrients you need to reach your goals! Plus, like our last point, it’ll definitely help your pockets. If you leave your meals sitting for too long, they’ll go bad, and you’ll throw them away. That’s literally like you throwing your money into the trash, and nobody wants that! If keeping with your calories and nutrients isn’t enough, that extra money factor will be sure to have you keeping with your pre-made meals.

Meal Prepping 101

If you’re used to cooking for more than one person, or even a family’s worth of people, then you’ll be pleased to know that meal prepping will come very naturally to you. If you’re not used to it, imagine that you are! The reason why we say this is because instead of cooking for numerous people for just one sitting, you’ll only be cooking for one person for numerous occasions!

We don’t suggest cooking a number of different kinds of meals for the week, but rather one kind that you’ll enjoy eating throughout the week. If you’d like, you can switch the meals up weekly to add some extra variety to your diet. Just make sure that when you begin meal prepping for the week, that you have enough food to cook for your week!

As far as equipment is concerned, the list of general necessities will look somewhere along these lines:

  • Large-sized pot(s)
  • Non-stick cooking spray or oil (we highly recommend this one)
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Aluminum foil
  • Baking sheets
  • Strainer
  • LOTS of Tupperware. Or Ziploc bags if you prefer
